CLUB TRYOUTS PHILOSOPHY
Tryouts
Magic is committed to providing youth players the opportunity to play at an appropriate age and skill level through annual open tryouts. Players will be given the opportunity each season to move to another team within the organization in order to place players in the best situation in which to grow and develop. While this will make the club more competitive, it is in player development that this seems to make the most sense.
Opportunity
By holding open tryouts, SCV Magic will give players a chance to move up to a team playing in a higher bracket, as well as a chance to move to a team playing at a lower bracket. We feel that ALL players should be provided this opportunity, and open tryouts give players the means in which to move to another team.
Proper Player Development
Proper player development comes not only with proper training, but with being in an environment that allows the player sufficient playing time. By placing a player on the appropriate team that reflects the players skill level, this will speed up skill development, as well as decision making and confidence, by allowing for more time on the field in actual game situations.
Age Appropriate
Players will be encouraged to play at their own age level, providing we have a team available. Skills and social development are best achieved for a player playing within their own age group. Exceptions could be made if: • No team is available at players age group
• Player is of exceptional ability and playing up will be most beneficial to players development Reasons for age appropriate play include, but are not limited to: • Social - Player development is accelerated in environments that are more socially compatible
• Physical - Especially at the younger ages, motor development, decision making, physical attributes, etc., are areas where playing with similar players is key to development. In most cases, U8 players playing on a U9 team will be moved to an age appropriate team after State Cup of players’ first season.
Conclusion
While SCV Magic recognizes that open tryouts, along with potential player movement, is not a popular proposition to some, it is important to understand that this policy is not an effort to create “winning” teams, but rather provide each and every player within our organization an opportunity to play at a level that gives the player the best chance to become a more skilled and confident athlete. We realize that moving from a higher bracketed team to a lower bracketed team may seem like a move backward, but such changes are made in an effort to provide a player with the best situation in which to grow and develop. Each player will have a chance to move to a higher or lower bracketed team each year.
A Message from Sergio Salvadori, DOC
Santa Clarita Valley Soccer Club "Magic"
The 2008 Season
The Soccer Season has just ended and the Holiday Season has just began for 2008, and I would like to take a moment to thank the players, parents, coaches, team managers, & the board members for an enjoyable and successful soccer season. Last year during this time the club was going through some turmoil but I think that everybody was able to put this behind them and move forward and work all together for the benefit of the club and its' members, the players.
SCV Magic's philosophy in the last two or three years, has been to build from the grassroots and this season we started with eight teams in the Girls and Boys U9 and U10 age groups. I think this is a step in the right direction that we'll keep building on for the years to come. Out of our twenty-one teams, five finished first or second in their respective divisions, which will make them eligible for promotion to the next level, more than any other local club in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Congratulations to the BU9 Green (Coach Lalo Zatarain) and the GU13 Green (Coaches Dave Storaker and Marty Smith) teams for finishing in first place in their bracket, and congratulations to the BU10 (Coach Sergio Salvadori), BU13 (Coach Diego Lara), and BU15 (Coach Gary Pugliese and Trainer Carlos Cuellar) teams for finishing in second place in their bracket.
This year we have also started our Youth Soccer Academy program with the joint effort and extensive experience of the Director Joel Govea, and Coach Lalo Zatarain. This program was established with player development in mind and club training methods, to get them ready to transition from recreational to competitive club soccer.
We have also established a Sponsorship and Fundraising Committee formed by four wonderful ladies that will try to help the club find financial resources to fund our current programs and hopefully establish some new ones like Fitness and Conditioning. A special thank you goes to Cindy Moore (GU10), Joni Shaffery (BU12), Christine Pierce (BU12), and Abby Perez (BU9 green) for volunteering.
I wish everyone a Happy & Healthy Holiday Season!
